Run the mile you're in

Updated: May 2, 2021

Well, this has been a tough few weeks! Losing my job was devastating for a variety of reasons. The sense of relief and excitation was unexpected, however, that soon wore off as the hours turned to days, turned to weeks, etc.

Argh!! It's easy to allow yourself to wallow in concern and self-doubt, I know...I'm the expert! However, a lesson I learned from my coach and a very important influencer to me that came about as I was preparing to compete in the triathlon Ironman70.3 Muncie has been invaluable. "Run the mile you're in." It seems so obvious and blatant; still the thing is when you're out there on the course and you just got off the 56 mile bike ride and are a mile or so in to the run, it's so easy to become overwhelmed and 'awfulize' the upcoming miles ahead. During 70.3 Muncie I approached it differently...I took each mile mindfully, yes there may have been 12, 11, 10,...more miles to go, the important thing was to do everything I could in the mile I was actually running. The me of the future will be there for the next mile so let him worry about that. This learning has been so important to me and now so more than ever as I wrangle with the non-stop rejections etc. So long as I remain focused on the greatest value I can bring with the moment/hour/day I am in the future looks brighter...
